According to the study published in the journal JAMA Network Open, patients suffering from long-term COVID experience several of the same lingering negative effects on their physical, mental, and social well-being as those experienced by people who become ill with other, non-COVID illnesses.

The findings of the study showed that 40% and 54% of the COVID-positive and COVID-negative groups, respectively, reported moderate-to-severe residual symptoms three months after enrolling in the study. The study included 1,000 participants with both acute COVID and without COVID (but sick with some other illness). At the time of testing, the patients with acute COVID had symptoms known to be associated with COVID, such as cough, fever, headache, or fatigue.

The study results showed that out of all the cohorts, 722 tested positive for COVID, and 278 tested negative. On comparing the well-being score between the two groups, the researchers found that the COVID-positive and COVID-negative groups looked more similar than different, but both groups had a worse well-being score than the general population.
